Lech Poznań midfielder Ali Gholizadeh appeared in Iran’s World Cup qualifiers. His squad drew 2:2 against Uzbekistan, but the tie was enough for Iran to advance to next year’s tournament.
Amir Ghalenoei’s players needed just one point to advance to the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. The beginning of the game didn’t go according to Iran’s plan – their opponent found the back of the net in the 16th minute thanks to Hojimat Erkinov. In the second half, Ali Gholizadeh and his teammates equalized, but Uzbekistan quickly replied with another goal – this time it was Abbosbek Fayzullayev who beat the Iranian’s keeper. The turning point happened in the 83rd minute when Mehdi Taremi took advantage of the chaos inside Uzbekistan’s box and converted Gholizadeh’s cross into a crucial equalizer. It was Taremi’s second goal that night.
As a result, Iran will be travelling to next year’s World Cup. Meanwhile, Gholizadeh is on his way back to Poznań to prepare for Lech’s upcoming league clash against Śląsk Wrocław. Interestingly, the match against Uzbekistan was Ali’s 40th national appearance. So far, the midfielder has 6 goals and 5 assists to his account.
