Jagiellonia Białystok - Lech Poznań 2:1

On Sunday evening, Lech Poznań faced Jagiellonia Białystok in the most-awaited clash of the league round. The current Polish Champions ended up winning 2:1 on their home ground, and Lech had to return to Poznań without a single league point. As a result, Niels Frederiksen’s squad are no longer the leader of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.

Lech travelled to Białystok in good spirits—the squad from Poznań had won the previous three games and scored three goals in each of them. However, their opponent was also on fire. Just a few days earlier, they had advanced to the quarterfinals of the Europa Conference League by beating Cercle Brugge 3:2 in a two-leg clash.

The game couldn’t have begun better for Lech – in the 8th minute, the score changed in their favour thanks to a well-executed free kick. Antoni Kozubal’s cross reached Bartosz Salamon who sent a strong pass along the goal line and Ali Gholizadeh redirected the ball into the back of the net. It was the Iranian’s fourth goal this season. For the next minutes, Lech stayed in control of the game but failed to cause any more problems to Jagiellonia’s defensive line. The hosts had their first offensive attempt 30 minutes into the match and it resulted in an equalizer. Kristoffer Hansen’s shot turned into an assist, and it was Jesus Imaz who managed to place the ball in Lech’s net with a bit of luck. Less than a minute later, Jagiellonia had another great goal-scoring opportunity, but Afimico Pululu’s strong shot bounced off the post.

The second half was more balanced with neither of the sides successfully dominating their opponent. The turning point took place in the 59th minute when Darko Churlinov and Edi Semedo led a lethal counterattack which ended in Radosław Murawski unluckily putting the ball in his net. Despite their efforts, Lech failed to beat Jagiellonia’s keeper for the second time that night, and they had to return to Poznań without a single league point. The loss also means that Niels Frederiksen and his squad are no longer the PKO BP Ekstraklasa leaders – they have fallen to the bottom of the league podium.
