In the pre-last league match of the 2020/2021 season, Lech Poznań beat Wisła Cracow 2:1.
In the first half, Lech dominated the match indisputably. Wisła focused on defending and stopping their opponent’s offensive attempts, which were surprisingly dangerous and enjoyable to watch considering Lech’s recent poor form. However, the first goal scored by the team from Poznań wasn’t a result of an impressive offensive attack but a well-executed set piece. Nika Kvekveskiri crossed the ball from the corner kick towards the closer post where Bartosz Salamon was waiting. The defender extended the pass and Mikael Ishak redirected it into the net with a header. Unfortunately for Lech, the Swedish forward was forced to leave the pitch shortly after when he suffered an injury and Aron Johannsson replaced him on the pitch.
Despite Lech’s domination on the field, the fans were forced to wait a while before they saw the second goal. Pedro Tiba, who had just entered the pitch less than a minute earlier, converted a good cross from Jesper Karlstrom in a second goal for the team from Poznań.
Having a two-goal advantage, Lech slowed down the pace. However, Wisła wasn’t going to give up and concentrated their efforts on catching up to their rival. 12 minutes before the final time, Jakub Błaszczykowski fired a precise and strong shot at Mickey van der Hart’s goal from a corner kick which left the Dutch keeper helpless. Still, Lech managed to stop Wisła from scoring a second goal and collected three important points in the pre-last round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
