The Icelandic player arrived in Poznań on Monday. On Tuesday morning, he underwent all of the medical tests, and since the staff gave him the green light, in the evening, he signed a contract with the current leader of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.

“Gisli Thordarson signed a 4.5-year contract which will last until June 30^th, 2029. He is a young player; we see a lot of potential in him and we hope that he will keep on developing the way he’s been doing so far. We have been observing him in the Icelandic youth national teams, and in the autumn, when he was competing in the Europa Conference League group stage with Vikingur Reykjavik. He’s been getting brilliant reviews and his team advanced further. Here at Lech, he is meant to put pressure on and reinforce the rivalry with Radosław Murawski and Antoni Kozubal who are the best midfield duo in Ekstraklasa,” highlighted Tomasz Rząsa, Lech’s Sporting Director.

Lech’s new midfielder is an Icelandic player who as a junior moved to Bologne (Italy) where he trained in the youth teams. He returned to his home country in the summer of 2022 and signed a contract with Vikingur – the same team that Lech competed against in the Europa Conference League qualifications in the season 2022/2023. Back then, it was the Polish side that triumphed, but in the current campaign, the Icelandic club qualified for the group phase of ECL after winning their national title. This past autumn, Thordarson appeared in 14 European games. He is also a member of the Icelandic U-21 squad.

“I feel incredible. Lech Poznań is a big club with a beautiful stadium. I know that the squad is very strong and that I have a challenge ahead of me; however, I am ready for it. From the first day, I will fight for a spot in the team. I cannot wait for the training sessions and the start of the [spring] round so that I can play in front of the wonderful fans. I am very happy,” said Gisli.

Interestingly, when Lech faced Vikingur 2.5 years ago, Gisli came to Poznań for the second leg of the clash. Back then, he probably did not imagine that in spring 2025, he would be playing in the Polish top division and that Enea Stadium would be his home ground. Thordarson chose to play with number 23 on his back. On Wednesday, at 1:30 PM, he will fly from Berlin to Antalya to join his new teammates in Lara (Turkey).
