Last Thursday, Lech Poznań drew 1:1 against Austria Vienna in the Europa Conference League. Now John van den Brom’s team has two important matches ahead of them – first, they will face the current league leaders, Raków Częstochowa (Sunday, 5:30 pm), and then they will play against Villarreal (Thursday, 9:00 pm).
The Polish Champions took the lead in the Thursday match at the beginning of the first half – Mikael Ishak converted a pass from Filip Szymczak into a goal - his fourth in the Europa Conference League this season. However, Lech failed to hold onto the score. Still, despite not winning the game, the team from Poznań still has a shot at making it out of group C.
“We cannot focus on the negatives. We won a point in Vienna; of course, we aren’t satisfied especially since we felt that we dominated on the pitch. We scored first and it’s a pity we failed to find the back of the net again – this would have been the turning point of the game,” explained Filip Szymczak, Lech’s forward.
Now Lech’s squad has another difficult match ahead of them. On Sunday, PKO BP Ekstraklasa’s current leaders – Raków Częstochowa – will come to Poznań. The team from Silesia has been performing well against Lech recently – they haven’t lost once in the past 7 matches.
“I wouldn’t put additional pressure on us since every match is important and we always strive to win. Of course, the clash with Raków is prestigious because we know the position they’re in currently. Our objective is to defeat them but it’s the 15th round, hence we’re not even halfway through the season. We will approach this game with maximum concentration because we know the quality Raków offers and what the most recent matches against them looked like. We still have bills to settle after the Polish Super Cup final. We don’t have much time to recover until Sunday, but we will do everything in our power to win three points,” emphasized the young striker.
Lech is 10 points behind Raków in the league table, but Lech still has one outstanding match to play. Similarly to John van den Brom’s squad, Raków also appeared in the international arena this season, however, they were eliminated from the Europa Conference League playoffs by Slavia Prague.
