Stal Mielec - Lech Poznań 0:2

The 2024/2025 season has begun extraordinarily for Lech Poznań. On Friday, Niels Frederiksen’s squad beat Stal Mielece 2:0, winning their third game in a row. In addition, it was Lech’s first triumph in Mielec in 31 years.

Niels Frederiksen and his team travelled to Podkarpacie after a great performance against Pogoń Szczecin in which Lech left their opponent helpless and triumphed 2:0. On Friday, the squad from Poznań had an equally difficult task – they faced Stal in an away clash - a stadium where Lech hasn’t won a single league game since 1993.

Nevertheless, Lech was the favourite in the Friday clash and they dominated the match since the referee’s first whistle. In the 4th minute, Dino Hotić found the back of the net, but the referee disallowed the goal due to Mikael Ishak’s offside. However, Lech wasn’t discouraged and they kept on generating goal-scoring chances. Afonso Sousa hit the post, and the Swedish captain also came close to finding the back of the net, but it wasn’t until half an hour into the game that Lech finally beat Stal’s defensive line. Hotić converted a free kick into a beautiful, precise shot that gave no chance to the hosts’ keeper. Niels Frederiksen’s players didn’t stop there and before the referee announced halftime, they were already leading by two goals. Antoni Kozubal sent a header in Ishak’s direction and the experienced striker beat Jakub Mądrzyków in a one-on-one situation, scoring his fifth goal this season.

The second half was slower and less exciting for the fans gathered in Mielec. Lech remained in control of the match and stopped Stal from causing any major problems to their defensive line but, at the same time, the squad from Poznań was also active in the offense. 15 minutes before the final time, Patrik Walemark appeared on the pitch – it was the Swede’s official debut for Lech and he had two good scoring chances, but he was unlucky. As a result, the game ended in a 2:0 win for Lech and Frederiksen’s team reinforced their position as the leaders of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
