120 minutes of an emotional rollercoaster that ended happily for Lech as the team from Poznań qualified to quarterfinals of the Fortuna Polish Cup. The top-division side beat Radomiak Radom in a penalty shootout and is now just two games away from the final.
The clash with Radomiak Radom wasn’t held on the second-tier club’s home ground since the weather conditions made it unsuitable to be played on. However, the pitch in Sosnowiec wasn’t much better and Lech visibly struggled on the frozen field.
As a result, for a majority of the time, the fans had to watch a relatively unlively game with few goal-scoring chances. Filip Szymczak came closest to getting a goal for Lech but his shot from a five-meter distance failed to surprise the keeper. Meanwhile, Karol Podliński who came in for Radomiak in the second half could have changed the score but his attempt stopped on the post.
After 90 minutes of play, it was still 0:0, hence the match went on to extra time. Early into the additional phase of the game, the team from Radom took the lead. The referee spotted Nika Kvekveskiri touch the ball with his hand and pointed to the white spot in the box. Mateusz Radecki converted the penalty kick into a goal for Radomiak. Shortly before the end of the match, just when it seemed that the second-tier team would qualify to the quarterfinals, Michał Skóraś was fouled in the box on the other end of the pitch. Tymoteusz Puchacz took advantage of the perfect scoring opportunity and got an equalizer for Lech Poznań.
Since it was still a draw after 120 minutes, the referee was forced to announce penalty shootout. The team from Poznań began the series of penalty kicks with two terrible attempts – one from Pedro Tiba which was saved by Radomiak’s keeper, and then a shot off target from Kravets’. Thankfully, Puchacz, Skóraś, Czerwiński and Kvekveskiri didn’t miss and since the team from Radom made three mistakes – two of their shots were stopped by Bednarek and one was imprecise – it was Lech that eventually triumphed and qualified to the next stage of Fortuna Polish Cup.
