David Holman's two goals eliminated Olimipia Grudziadz from the Polish Cup, while Lech advanced to the round of 8. The next rival the team from Poznan is going to face will be either Wisla Cracow or Ruch Chorzow.
Three years ago Lech Poznan travelled to Grudziadz to face local Olimpia in the round of 8 of the Polish Cup. However, the finalists of the previous year's edition failed to advance further. Today Lech appeared on Olimpia's stadium in very similar circumstances. Nonetheless, no one among the Polish Champions predicted being beaten again, despite a completely different lineup from the one that has been playing recently. Players like Abdul Tetteh and David Holman finally got more minutes. Moreover, for the first time this season Maciej Wilusz was a part of the starting XI.
Since the opening minutes the two forwards - Donald Djousse and Denis Thomalla - were very active, but so was David Holman. The Hungarian player put Lech on the lead in the 9th minute. Kedziora received a pass from Thomalla inside the penalty area and the defender sent a massive shot in the direction of the goal. The goalkeeper managed to stop the shot, however he was helpless when Holman recovered the ball, passed two defenders and sent it flying into the net.
The hosts could have scored an equalizer shortly afterwards. Kaczmarek dribbled past Ceesay easily and if it wasn't for Wilusz, his shot could have caused trouble to Lech. Olimpia's winger had another chance soon after when his team was awarded a free kick from the 18th meter, but his shot flew above the crossbar.
The team from Poznan was focused on counterattacks, but they had to stay focus because the hosts were determined to diminish the losses. Most of Olimpia's actions went through the left flank where Robert Szczot was placed. The winger did his best to cause problems to Lechs defense line, but usually he failed. Nonetheless, Piter-Bucko, Donald Djousse and Adam Cieslinski had their goal-scoring opportunities and even though they failed to equalize, the defenders from Poznan had to stay cautious.
Lech's first offensive action in the second half ended with a goal, but it was correctly disallowed. After a cross that came from a corner kick, Kaminski redirected the ball into the penalty area with his head and Ceesay sent it into the back of the net. However, the passer was offside, and therefore the linesman raised his flag.
The hosts attacked as intensively as their rival. Both Djousse and Woźniak attempted to convince the referee that Olimpia should be awarded a penalty kick, but in neither of the cases did the referee point to the penalty area and he was right to do so.
Olimpia's offensive actions caused problems to Lech. In the 57th minute Banasiak rushed into the penalty area and found himself one-against-one with Gostomski. Instead of shooting, the defender tried dribbling, and therefore Maciej Wilusz had no problem recovering the ball. Soon afterwards Kolejorz had a chance of its own, but Holman failed to beat the goalkeeper.
In the last quarter of the match, Olimpia had a few good goal-scoring opportunities, among them Kazlauskas' shot which was blocked by Tetteh. One of the hosts' offensive actions ended with Lech's counterattack, but luckily for Olimpia, Formella was stopped by one of the defenders.
7 minutes before the last whistle the first-league team was very close to equalizing. Kaminski's error ended with Pawela one-against-one with Gostomski, however the goalkeeper intervened successfully. The wasted chances took revenge on Olimpia in 86th minute when Lovrencsics sent a cross to Holman and the latter placed the ball in the back of the net. Due to the score, Lech is the team that advanced to the round of 8 where they will face either Wisla Cracow or Ruch Chorzow.
