Lech Poznań has signed a new player. On Tuesday afternoon, Mateusz Żukowski signed a contract with the Polish club – he will join Lech on a one-year loan from Rangers FC. The agreement includes a buyout clause.
Żukowski was born in 2001 in Lębork, but as a junior, he joined Lechia Gdańsk. He made a debut in the top division at the age of 16. Later, he was loaned to Chojniczanka Chojnice before returning to Lechia and becoming a part of the starting line-up. Żukowski made 44 appearances for Lechia in the top division, scored two goals, and got one assist. In the winter last season, he joined the Europa League finalists - Rangers FC. He appeared in 3 games for the Scottish side.
“Mateusz will join us on a loan until the end of the season. The agreement also includes a buyout clause,” said Tomasz Rząsa, Lech’s Sporting Director. “The new player is meant to reinforce the right side of our defensive line where Joel Pereira and Alan Czerwiński, who is injured, usually play. Żukowski can also play higher up the pitch, as a winger. Mateusz knows our league very well. He transferred to a strong club where he improved physically. We hope he continues his development here at Lech,” added the Sporting Director.
Żukowski doesn’t regret the time he spent in Scotland. I hope to show everything I have learned over the past few months at Rangers. I return to Poland as a better player and a better person. I am very thrilled, and I cannot wait for the first training session and the first match,” emphasized Lech’s newest transfer who, right after signing the contract, visited the dressing room and joined a training session. Żukowski will compete for Lech with no. 27 on his shirt.
Recently, Mateusz played mainly as a right-back, but in the past, he was also positioned as a midfielder.
“I like both positions. It’s up to the coach where I am going to play. At Rangers, I was positioned as a right-back – not during matches, because I didn’t appear in many, but during training sessions. I worked a lot on improving as a right defender. However, I also enjoy playing on the wing – it’s my initial position. Hence, I am happy to play where the coach needs me to,” highlighted Żukowski for whom the integration process will be much easier as he already knows Michał Skóraś, Filip Szymczak, Filip Marchwiński from the Polish youth national teams, and Artur Sobiech from Lechia Gdańsk.
