Three weeks ago, Maciej Skorża was celebrating the Championship title together with his team but now, he is forced to part ways with the club for personal reasons. “I have asked the club to terminate my contract. Unfortunately, due to personal matters, I am unable to continue working for Lech. It wasn’t an easy decision, but there was simply no other option,” said the coach.
“Coach Skorża shared the details of his personal situation with us. He could count on the support of everyone at the club throughout the last season, and also during the last few days when he came to us asking to terminate the contract. We tried finding a solution that would enable Skorża to continue working at Lech. We have spoken numerous times over the last couple of days and were hoping we could make it work. With sadness – and shock – on Monday, we have accepted Maciej’s final decision to resign. We couldn’t have imagined that we would part ways so unexpectedly. However, we understand that although football is important because it gives us indescribable emotions, there are matters much more important,” explained Lech’s owner, Piotr Rutkowski.
Shortly after the Championship celebrations, Skorża left for a two-week holiday during which he was not only supposed to get some rest, but also decide whether he would be able to continue coaching the first team. On Monday, he made his final decision to leave the club.
“Unfortunately, I am forced to leave Lech, and football in general. I would like to thank chairmen Rutkowski and Klimczak, as well as sporting director Rząsa, my coworkers, and players who have done an amazing job on the pitch and for all the support I have received recently. It’s truly touching, and it shows that Lech is more than a club,” emphasized the 50-year-old coach. “Dear supporters, I would like to ask you to understand how hard this decision has been for me. I have experienced kindness from you at various moments and these beautiful memories will stay with me forever,” added Skorża.
“We want to thank coach Skorża sincerely for all that he has done for the club – for his hard work, passion, and commitment. Second Championship title under his leadership, won during the club’s 100th anniversary season and all those amazing emotions will stay with us forever. It’s not an easy situation for us but we accept it, knowing well that there are more important things. However, we believe that it’s not a ‘goodbye’ but a ‘see you later’ and that Skorża’s history at Lech will have another chapter,” highlighted Lech’s chairman, Karol Klimczak.
Maciej Skorża took over Lech’s senior squad for the second time in April 2021. In the recent campaign, he won his fourth Championship title and his second at Lech Poznań. Moreover, he achieved it with an astonishing average of 2,18 points per match. Lech’s team scored the most goals in the league and also had the best defense which, without a doubt, made them the best team in PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
We thank the coach sincerely for all his outstanding job at Lech Poznań, and we keep our fingers crossed for him!
