After Lech Poznań kicked off the spring round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa with a great match against Widzew, Niels Frederiksen’s squad travelled to Gdańsk to face the local club Lechia. Despite having the perfect chance to increase the point advantage over their league opponents, Lech surprisingly lost 0:1.
Lech played their match as the last team from the top four this weekend. Jagiellonia Białystok, Raków Częstochowa, and Legia Warsaw all lost their league games, giving Lech the perfect chance to increase the point advantage over their rivals. In addition, the clash with Lechia was an opportunity for the team from Poznań to end a three-match run of away games without a win.
However, Lechia didn’t make things easy for Lech – they began the match by putting strong pressure on their rival’s defensive line. In the 14th minute, Lech's situation became much more complicated because Alex Douglas received a second yellow card for another tactical foul and Niels Frederiksen’s squad was down to 10 men. Meanwhile, Lechia didn’t slow down and kept on creating goal-scoring opportunities. For a while, the hosts were spared from conceding a goal thanks to Lechia’s lack of efficiency, but shortly before halftime, the score changed – Tomas Bobcek put the ball in the back of Lech’s net. The replays showed an offside, however, the goal wasn’t overruled.
In the second half, Lech was braver in their offensive attempts but lacked good goal-scoring chances. Rasmus Carstensen and Gisli Thordarson were very active on the flanks but their hard work wasn’t enough to turn the tables. As a result, Lechia won three important points in their fight to avoid relegation, whereas Lech now needs to focus on their upcoming home clash, against Raków Częstochowa.
