On Friday evening, Aron Johannsson officially became a Lech Poznań player. The 30-year-old American forward signed a contract until the end of 2021 with the option to extend the agreement until June 2023.
So far, Lech Poznań signed 5 new players in this winter transfer window – midfielders Jesper Karlström and Nika Kvekveskiri, defenders Bartosz Salamon and Antonio Milić, and now also Aron Johannsson. In addition, the club reached an agreement with Radosław Murawski who will join the team from Poznań on July 1st.
The 30-year-old American with Icelandic roots arrived in Poznań on Thursday evening. The next day he underwent medical tests in Rehasport Clinic at noon and, having been given a green light, signed a contract with Lech in the evening. The agreement is going to last until December 31st, 2021 with the option to extend the contract for another 18 months, depending on the player’s ability to win the rivalry with Mikael Ishak and Filip Szymczak and earn a spot in the starting line-up.
“Aron will undoubtedly be a great reinforcement of our offensive line. He is versatile and can play as the main striker and also as no. 10 the way he was positioned back at Hammarby, e.g. in the Europa League qualifiers against us. With Aron in the squad, we will be able to play with two forwards, especially since he prefers this kind of formation. At his previous clubs, he would occasionally be placed on the wing but I consider him as an asset in the opponent’s penalty area,” explained Dariusz Żuraw, Lech’s coach.
Aron spent the last two season in Sweden, more precisely at Hammarby IF – a team that Lech Poznań faced in the 2nd qualifying round of Europa League (3:0). The past campaign has been a good one for Johannsson who scored 12 goals in 22 games. Before joining the Swedish club, he competed for Werder Bremen, AZ Alkmaar and Danish Aarhus GF. Meanwhile, his football career began in Iceland where he was born and made his first steps in the youth national teams. As an adult, he chose to represent the USA and has already got 19 caps and 4 goals on his account. Johannsson even got to travel to Brazil together with the American national team for the World Cup in 2014.
“It’s difficult to describe my own strengths, but what I can say is that I am capable of playing as a striker as well on other offensive positions. I love scoring and creating opportunities to do so for my teammates and that’s the way I want to positively influence the team’s results. Not long ago, at my former club Hammarby IF, I had the chance to compete against Lech, and I remember that there were a lot of very good players who had great technique. Hence, I cannot wait to play with them and help the club get the best possible results,” emphasised Aron Johannsson.
The American forward will play with number 20 on the back of his shirt.
