In the first league clash of the spring round, Lech Poznań faced Zagłębie Lubin at home. It was also the first match with Mariusz Rumak as the coach - the Pole returned to Lech after 9 years, replacing John van den Brom.
Throughout the winter break, Lech's squad prepared for the second part of the season in Poznań and Belek (Turkey). Mariusz Rumak’s team also played a few friendly games – against LASK Linz (0:3), NK Maribor (3:0), Shakhtar Donetsk (1:3), Lech II Poznań (5:1), and Wisła Płock (4:0). Although the results of the training matches were optimistic, coach Mariusz Rumak didn’t have several key players at his disposal for the clash with Zagłębie, among them the injured Mikael Ishak, Miha Blažič and Filip Dagerstål, as well as Afonso Sousa who is ill, and Ali Gholizadeh who hasn’t returned from the AFC Asian Cup yet.
Despite missing a few players, Lech got to work from the very first whistle and by minute 4, they were already up by one goal. Adriel Ba Loua took advantage of Aleks Ławniczak’s mistake, recovered the ball close to Zagłębie’s box, and Filip Szymczak converted the winger’s perfect pass into the opening goal. The successful attempt was a confidence boost for the hosts. Meanwhile, Zagłębie lacked ideas and opportunities to cause problems for Lech’s defensive line. However, the team from Lubin did have one good goal-scoring chance, early in the second half, resulting from a miscommunication between Barry Douglas and Joel Pereira. Still, Tomasz Pieńko’s shot was slightly off target.
Wasted chances like to take revenge and not long later, Radosław Murawski scored for the hosts with a beautiful shot from outside the box, setting the final score to 2:0. It was Lech that added three important points to their league account and decreased the gap to Śląsk Wrocław who lost points in the clash with Pogoń Szczecin (0:1).
