Lech Poznań has failed to defeat their league opponent for the third time this season. This time it was Śląsk Wrocław that turned out to be better than the current Polish Champions – the team from Lower Silesia won 1:0 following Petr Schwarz’s goal.
Lech’s squad has been weakened by injuries after the Thursday match against Vikingur Reykjavik (4:1). Aside from Bartosz Salamon and Lubomir Šatka who have been struggling with injuries for some time now, Antonio Milić and Filip Dagerstål were also ruled unfit to play. As a result, the 19-year-old Maksymilian Pingot - for whom it was the fourth PKO BP Ekstraklasa match – was positioned as a center-back alongside Nika Kvekveskiri.
When it comes to the offensive line, van den Brom chose Mikael Ishak, who scored his first league goal of the season last week, and Gio Tsitaishvili. And it was the Georgian player that was the most active footballer on the pitch in the opening minutes. He even created a couple of scoring-chances – goalkeeper Michał Szromnik successfully stopped Tsitaishvili’s first shot, whereas his second attempt was slightly off target.
Lech put pressure on Śląsk’s defensive line, but they lacked precision. In the first half, the host’s defenders made one, but a very costly, mistake – in the 26th minute, Lech lost the ball on Śląsk’s half of the pitch, and the guests led a counterattack which Petr Schwarz converted into a goal with a strong, precise shot from outside the box.
Van den Brom’s team tried equalizing before halftime. Tsitaishvili had another shot off target whereas Marchwiński’s attempt stopped on the post. In the second part of the match, Lech didn’t visit Śląsk’s penalty area as often – the exhaustion, which was a result of the 120 minutes played on Thursday, was evident. Filip Bednarek was much busier in the second half but he managed to stop Erik Exposito and Sebastian Bergier from changing the score. In the last minutes of the match, Lech came close to equalizing, but Michał Skóraś’s shot was slightly off target.
It was Lech’s third league loss this season. The players from Poznań will get another opportunity to bounce back next Sunday (August 28th, 5:30 pm), in a home clash with Piast Gliwice. It will also be a chance for Lech to get their first win in front of the home crowd – until now, the team from Poznań failed to beat their opponents when playing at Bułgarska Street.
