After the clash with the leaders of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań had another difficult test ahead of them – a match against Śląsk Wrocław who is ranked second in the league table. Although Jacek Magiera’s squad didn’t kick off 2024 too well, the game was an indisputable challenge for the players from Poznań.
Lech was optimistic ahead of the Saturday league game. The two wins in a row enabled Mariusz Rumak’s squad to catch up to Śląsk, who were just two points ahead of Lech before their direct clash. In addition, Jagiellonia’s draw against Ruch Chorzów (1:1) gave Lech an opportunity to jump to the top of the league table, on the condition that they beat their opponent from Wrocław.
Unlike Śląsk, Lech was focused primarily on the offensive since the kick-off. The hosts stayed in possession of the ball for the majority of the time and looked for opportunities to place the ball in the net. Meanwhile, the team from Wrocław concentrated on the defence and it was clear that their objective was not to concede a goal. As a result, Śląsk stayed in their penalty area for most of the match, whereas Lech struggled to get past the wall built by their opponent. Kristoffer Velde came the closest to scoring in the first half, but his shot from outside the box was successfully stopped by Rafał Leszczyński.
Lech’s domination on the pitch was even more evident in the second half. Filip Marchwiński had a good goal-scoring opportunity early in the second part of the game, but his shot was off-target. Just before the referee announced the end of the match, it was Śląsk who came close to turning the tables – Patryk Klimala who came in from the bench had an impressive individual run which he finished off with a strong, flat shot. Luckily for the hosts, Bartosz Mrozek stopped the attempt and saved his team from losing points. A few moments later, the referee ended the match and the two sides were forced to share points.
