After the win against Arka Gdynia, Lech Poznań players did not have a lot of time to rest before facing Piast Gliwice – only 62 hours separated the two clashes – however, John van den Brom’s squad emphasized that the short recovery wouldn’t be an issue and that they’ll be ready for the home league clash.
Piast Gliwice is the team with the most ties this season – so far, they had to share points with their opponents 12 times. In addition, Piast has yet to win an away game in this campaign. Meanwhile, Lech was determined to win the last home match this year and catch up to Śląsk Wrocław, i.e., the current leaders of PKO BP Ekstraklasa.
The Sunday game looked a lot like the past few games held at Bułgarska Street – Lech had the ball for the majority of the time but they struggled to create goal-scoring opportunities. Only individual efforts caused any problems to Piast’s defensive line. Kristoffer Velde came close to scoring in the first half, but his shot was slightly off-target.
The second half was very similar. The hosts remained in control of the game and Jesper Karlstrom even came close to scoring a header, but Karol Szymański intervened successfully. The closer to the final whistle, the more Lech dominated on the pitch. However, the tables turned when Piast was awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute. Mikael Ishak fouled Tomas Huk inside Lech’s penalty area and Patryk Dziczek converted the set piece into what later turned out to be a winner. It was Lech’s second loss at home in a row.
