Lech Poznan beat Legia Warsaw in the 11th league match of the season. The side from Poznan won 3:0 at home, following the goals from Gajos, Tralka and Makuszewski. The 3 points helped Lech move up to the 2nd rank in the league table.
The opening minutes were marked by numerous direct clashes in the midfield. That resulted in a lot of fouls and yellow cards. Kopczynski received the first warning very early, cause in the 2nd minute. Meanwhile, Lech tried to beat Legia’s defensive line using the flanks, however, most of Situm’s and Makuszewski’s crosses were either inaccurate or blocked. In the 12th minute Gumny decided to send a pass into the box where Gajos was waiting. The ball was very precise and so was the midfielder’s header which left the goalkeeper helpless.
After 20 minutes of play Rene Poms, assistant coach, was forced to make the first substitution. Situm left the pitch with an injury and Radut replaced his teammate. Shortly afterwards Lech had another scoring chance following a good individual run from Jevtic, but the player’s shot flew a couple of centimetres above the crossbar. The hosts found a way to beat Legia once again, but this time from a set piece. Jevtic converted a corner kick into a precise cross, while Tralka redirected the ball towards the post and into the back of the net.
Legia had its best scoring chance soon afterwards. Moulin approached a corner kick, while Dabrowski attempted to beat Putnocky, however, it was the goalkeeper that won the direct clash, with the help from Janicki. The opening minutes of the second half looked similar to the first 45 minutes – Legia struggled to take control of the match since Lech successfully stopped their offensive actions in the midfield. Meanwhile, the hosts attempted to counterattack. Lech had better scoring chances – Radut’s shot forced Legia’s goalkeeper to intervene, while Gumny’s attempt was slightly off-target.
In the 65th minute the score changed again. Makuszewski added the third goal to Lech’s account following a good long ball from Bille. It was the midfielder’s third league goal this season. Despite a definitive advantage, Lech continued to play aggressively and successfully stopped Legia from coming too close to their goal whilst creating more scoring chances. In the 70th minute Malarz had to intervene to stop Lasse Nielsen’s header.
The closing minutes of the match gave another rejoice for Lech fans to rejoice, this time thanks to VAR system. The referee cancelled a penalty kick awarded to Legia after seeing the replay. Both sides had scoring chances afterwards, but the score didn’t change and when the referee ended the match, Lech could celebrate an important win.
