In the 23rd round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech beat Lechia Gdańsk 5:0 at home following goals from Kristoffer Velde (2), Antonio Milić, Michał Skóraś, and Mikael Ishak.
Lech’s squad was highly motivated to win the Friday league game. They wanted to bounce back after two losses in a row; after all, to be able to compete in the European arena next season, they need to be ranked in the top 3 at the end of the current campaign. Hence, John van den Brom and his players ought to improve their performances on the Polish pitches and the clash with Lechia was an excellent place to start.
The team from Gdańsk has been struggling this season. Although in autumn last year, they played in the qualifications for the Europa Conference League, they were eliminated in the second round by Rapid Vienna (0:0, 1:2) and now, instead of fighting at the top of the league table for a spot in the European qualifiers next season, they are in the relegation zone.
The difference between the current forms of the two sides has been evident since the first whistle. Before the match really began, Jespera Karlström already came close to scoring, but his shot ended up being unluckily blocked by one of his teammates. In the 25th minute, Lech opened the scoring sheet. Pedro Rebocho sent a precise cross from the right flank into the box and Antonio Milić converted the pass into a header which hit the back of the net. It was the defender’s first goal of the season.
The hosts changed the score again shortly before halftime when Lechia’s keeper, Dusan Kuciak, tried booting the ball and ended up hitting Michał Skóraś which resulted in a second goal for Lech. In the second half, the hosts added three more goals – first, Mikael Ishak scored his 10th goal of the season, and then Kristoffer Velde found the back of the net twice after coming in just 10 minutes earlier.
It was Lech’s 11th league win this season. With 39 points in their account, John van den Brom’s squad is ranked 3rd. Lech’s next match – this time in the round of 8 of the Europa Conference League, against Djurgårdens IF – will take place on March 9th (9:00 pm) at Bułgarska Street.
