Lech’s race for the championship has taken an unexpected turn. The team from Poznan was beaten by Jagiellonia in a home clash. Lech, therefore, fell to the third position in the league rank and is now 5 points behind Legia who occupies the first spot.
The clash between the 2nd and 3rd team in the league rank could determine which of the two clubs would have a better shot at the championship. If Jagiellonia was beaten by the rival from Poznan, they would most likely lose any chance of winning the title. Therefore, the guests attacked since the first whistle, causing problems to Lech’s defensive line through a number of set pieces. Runje came close to scoring in the opening minutes but his attempt was slightly off target.
Sheridan was more precise in the 16th when he received a pass from Novikovas and tapped the ball into the back of the net. The conceded goal was an extra motivation for the team from Poznan. Lech quickly took control of the play, but the hosts’ attempts were off target.
A couple of minutes later Situm placed the ball in the back of the net, but Gytkjaer who executed the last pass was caught offside the goal was disallowed. Meanwhile, Gumny’s attempt was off target and flew above the crossbar. The team from Poznan kept on pressing high, but they needed to stay alert because Jagiellonia was dangerous with their counterattacks. One of Jaga’s rapid offensive actions ended with Sheridan hitting the side net. In the 36th minute, Lech had a perfect chance to equalize when Gumny sent a precise cross into the box, but Jozwiak was slightly too slow and Runje intercepted the pass.
Bjelica sent in Makuszewski for the second half in hope that the midfielder would strengthen the offensive line. The substitution visibly influenced the game and Lech intensified their attacks. However, despite dominating the game, it was Jagiellonia that scored. The team from Bialystok was given a corner kick that Kwiecien converted into a goal.
Lech was determined to win at least a single point, but the team from Poznan lacked goal-scoring opportunities to equalize. The hosts relied on set pieces which rarely resulted in attempts on target. A single goal would have been enough to give Lech hope and energy to fight for a draw or even a win, but the closer to the final whistle, the more hopeless and unmotivated the players seemed.
Despite a lack of determination, Lech did build a couple of scoring chanced. In the 75th minute, Situm spotted Tralka who was entering the box, but the pass was slightly imprecise. Shortly afterward, Khoblenko recovered the ball in Jagiellonia’s penalty box, but instead of shooting, the player wanted to dribble and lost the ball. Koljic also had a chance to score a goal for Lech, but he failed to intercept Jozwiak’s pass into the box. Meanwhile, Khoblenko’s header was off target. Lech’s lack of precision resulted in a loss of points that might have deprived the team from Poznan a shot at the championship.
