Lech Poznań began the 2024/2025 PKO BP Ekstraklasa season with a win. Mikael Ishak and Dino Hotić helped defeat Górnik Zabrze at home.
The opening league game of the 2024/2025 season was an official debut for Lech’s new coach – Niels Frederiksen. The starting line-up included two more new names – Alex Douglas who joined Lech from the Swedish side Vasteras, and Antoni Kozubal who has just returned from loan.
The hosts began the match at an intense pace and dominated the opponent. Whenever Górnik took control of the ball, Lech skillfully and quickly recovered it. Most of their offensive attempts came via the centre of the pitch - one such goal-scoring chance could have ended with Antoni Kozubal placing the ball in the back of the net, but the youngster’s shot flew above the crossbar. Niels Frederiksen’s squad took the lead later in the first half. The referee didn’t notice Soichiro Kozuki’s handball at first, but a VAR analysis resulted in a penalty kick for Lech, which Mikael Ishak confidently converted into a goal.
The overall pace of the match was slower in the second half, but the hosts remained dominating on the pitch. Ishak came close to changing the score twice, but his first shot was too strong, and his second attempt was successfully stopped by Michał Szromnik. Lech set the final score to 2:0 in the added time when Dino Hotić won a clash with Kamil Lukoszek on the right flank, raced into the box, and beat the keeper with a strong shot under the crossbar.
