In the first training match in Belek, Lech Poznań drew with Astra Giurgiu 0:0. The Polish club tested two different line-ups in the clash with the Romanian side.
The first minutes concentrated on the midfield where the two sides fought for the ball. Finally, Lech managed to take possession of the ball and gradually gained an advantage over the Romanian opponent. Despite being awarded three free kicks that could cause Astra Giurgiu big problems, Lech didn’t create any good scoring chances in the first quarter of the match. When Kaminski sent a great cross into the penalty area, Gytkjaer tried surprising Astra’s goalkeeper with a header but the shot wasn’t troublesome for the side from Romania. A moment later, Jozwiak attempted to score but he failed too.
Lech’s attacks gradually intensified and it looked like they were seconds away from scoring. However, the club from Poznan clearly struggled with the last phase. In the 27th minute, Muhar found a way to place the ball in the net, but the referee spotted a foul and the goal was disallowed. Lech's lack of precision meant that all their goal-scoring opportunities went to waste. Coach Żuraw was determined to change that, hence he sent a different line-up for the second half.
However, it was Astra Giurgiu that looked better in the second half. Lech was still searching for ways to place the ball in the back of the net but without much success. In the 64th minute, Karol Szymanski’s caution was tested by one of the Romanian players. On the other end of the pitch, Mateusz Skrzypczak tried surprising Astra’s keeper with a shot from outside the box. From then on, the match resembled the first half – the squad from Poznan occupied Astra’s penalty area but had no clue how to beat their defense. Around the 75th minute, Letniowski dribbled past a few Romanian players but his shot was blocked. Bartkowiak had a great opportunity to score a moment later but he also failed to convert it into a goal.
The closer to the end of the match, the braver the two teams were which left a lot of space for both sides to counterattack. Szymanski stayed alert until the final whistle and in the 87th minute, he saved his team from conceding a goal.
