The Sunday league game did not go according to Lech’s plan as the team from Poznań was defeated at home by Zagłębie Lubin 1:2.
Coach van den Brom made 8 changes in the starting line-up compared to the Thursday away game against FK Bodo/Glimt. Some of those squad alterations were forced by yellow cards – it was the case for Jesper Karlstrom and Radosław Murawski – and some were meant to enable the players to recover following the Europa Conference League match in Norway.
Those changes in the line-up had a visible impact on Lech’s performance, especially in terms of how organised the team was on the pitch. Their mistakes were costly as Zagłębie managed to place the ball in the back of the net twice from counterattacks as a result of Lech’s errors.
Shortly before halftime, Artur Sobiech beat Zagłębie’s keeper. The hosts had many more goal-scoring opportunities in the second half but failed to convert them into an equalizer. Finally, Mikael Ishak found the back of the net, but the referees disallowed the goal as a result of a handball which, as the replays later showed, didn’t happen.
In the end, John van den Brom’s squad had to accept a difficult loss. The squad from Poznań has little time to bounce back as on Thursday they will play FK Bodo/Glimt at home in the second leg of the round of 16. If Lech manages to win the Europa Conference League game, it will be a historic moment for the club.
