In the 13th round of PKO Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznan lost to Zaglebie Lubin 1:2 at home. Gytkjaer scored one for the hosts in the added time of the second half.
Following last week’s loss to Legia Warsaw, Lech was determined to prove their potential against Zaglebie. The Friday match kicked off with a series of corner kicks for the team from Zaglebie, and then the hosts took possession of the ball which resulted in a great goal-scoring opportunity for Moder. Unluckily for Lech, the youngster’s shot on target was successfully stopped by the keeper. A moment later, Zaglebie regained control of the match and it took them only a few minutes to score the first goal. Once again, the guests were given a corner kick which Tosik converted into a goal.
Lech went back to work and attempted to dominate the play. They created numerous scoring chances and Amaral had three great opportunities to equalize. First, his header was too weak to surprise the keeper, then he mishit the ball, and his last attempt was off target too. The hosts’ efforts didn’t result in a goal before halftime.
However, when they came back for the second half, they seemed to be even more determined to win three points. Jozwiak had an opportunity to grab an equalizer but his shot was clearly off target. Then Moder came to execute a free kick and similarly to his Academy teammate, his attempt was imprecise. Lech’s coaching staff decided to make two changes – they sent it Marchwinski – a young talent – and Tiba who has just recovered from an injury.
Just when it seemed that Lech had everything in control, Zaglebie used their opponent's mistake to build a lethal counterattack. Crnomarkovic lost the ball when building the play from the back and Bohar had no problems beating van der Hart in a one-on-one clash. Following the second goal, Zaglebie moved back deeper into defense and waited for chances and space to counterattack. Tiba, Marchwinski, and Puchacz had opportunities to pull one goal back but most of their attempts were either blocked by Zaglebie’s defensive line or off target.
In the added time, Marchwinski came very close to scoring, and a minute later his Danish teammate found the back of the net after receiving a great pass from the corner of the pitch. Gytkjaer’s goal was particularly impressive – he placed the ball in the net in Zlatan Ibrahimovic style, i.e. with his heel. Shortly before the final whistle, Lech had a great chance to get an equalizer but the forwards’ indecisiveness meant that Puchacz’s great cross from a corner kick went to waste. Lech didn’t have any more time left to fight for one point, hence they had to accept another loss. On Tuesday, the players from Poznan will travel to Rzesow where they will face the local Resovia in the Polish Cup.
