This match will be remembered by Lech fans for a very long time. The team from Poznań defeated last season’s Champions League semifinalists – Villarreal – 3:0 and advanced to the knockout stage of the Europa Conference League.
Prior to Lech’s last match of the group stage, one thing was sure – if they won, they’d advance to the next phase of the competition. Meanwhile, a draw or a loss would mean that all depended on the final score of the match between Hapoel Beer Sheva and Austria Wien. The Israeli team beat their Austrian opponent 4:0 which meant that if Lech didn’t win, they’d be out of the tournament.
Fortunately, Lech didn’t need to pay attention to the score of the other match because they defeated confidently their much stronger opponent. Although the Spaniards seemed to be in control in the first half of the match, at halftime the scoreboard showed a 1-goal advantage for the hosts following Kristoffer Velde’s successful attempt.
In the second part of the match, Lech added two more goals, both of which Michał Skóraś was an author of, whereas Velde and Mikael Ishak got assists. Villarreal failed to create a single good goal-scoring opportunity in the second half; Lech defended their goal without making any error and secured a confident, well-deserved 3:0 win.
Lech will learn their opponent in the round of 16 of the Europa Conference League on Monday, during a draw which will take place in Nyon, Switzerland.
