The first league match of the 2022/23 season wasn’t a successful performance for Lech Poznań. Instead of uplifting their morales ahead of the Conference League clash with Dinamo Batumi, van den Brom’s team lost to Stal Mielec 0:2 at home.
The match against Stal Mielec seemed to be a perfect opportunity to bounce back after two hurtful losses – against Raków Częstochowa (0:2) in the Super Cup final and against Qarabag FK (1:5) in Champions League qualifiers.
However, even before the league game began, Lech has already started encountering problems. First, Antonio Milić was forced to miss the match due to an illness, and the 19-year-old Maksymilian Pingot, for whom it was a debut, had to replace the experienced defender. Adriel Ba Loua was also missing due to an injury and before the first half had ended, Radosław Murawski joined him on the bench for the same reason.
Despite those issues, Lech was expected to beat their lower-ranked rival, yet from the start of the match, the Poznań team struggled to deliver – they lacked creativity in the offense and played nervously in the defense.
Stal took advantage of Lech’s poor performance and within 15 minutes, they already scored thanks to Piotr Wlazło. The conceded goal didn’t have an expected effect on Lech – they continued playing poorly and struggling to beat Stal’s defensive line. Following halftime, Stal sealed the victory with Maciej Domański’s goal which resulted from a mistake made by Lech’s defense.
Lech’s next match is scheduled for Thursday (6:00 pm) – that’s when the Poznań side will face Dinamo Batumi in Europa Conference League qualifiers.
