Unfortunately, PGE National Stadium remains unbeaten by Lech Poznań. On May 2nd, Skorża’s squad played their fourth Polish Cup final on the Warsaw stadium and, for the fourth time, failed to claim the trophy. Raków Częstochowa was crowned the Polish Cup winner after beating the team from Poznań 3:1.
Since the very start of the match, things didn’t go according to plan for Lech. The team from Poznań seemed to struggle with the pressure and made numerous mistakes, one of which ended up with Raków scoring the first goal. In the 6th minute, Vladislavs Gutkovskis easily beat Lubimor Satka in a one-on-one clash and, with a very precise shot, placed the ball in the back of the net.
The conceded goal was a harsh wake-up call for Skorża’s squad who finally regained consciousness and started putting pressure on Raków’s defensive line. Unfortunately, the lack of precision meant that Lech couldn’t equalize. Jakub Kamiński came close to scoring but his beautiful, technical shot from outside the box hit the woodwork. Meanwhile, Raków was much more efficient in their offensive attempts, and in the 36th minute, they scored again, this time as a result of a fast counterattack which Mateusz Wdowiak converted into a goal.
At halftime, Skorża sent in Joao Amaral and the Portuguese player brought fresh energy to the team. He was also the one who accurately redirected Kownacki’s shot into the back of Raków net with his head, giving Lech’s supporters some hope. At that point, Lech started regaining control of the game.
Unfortunately, the hope was short-lived as in the 76th minute Raków scored again. Ivi Lopez’s goal made it clear that Lech no longer had a chance to win the trophy.
Hence, Raków defended the Polish Cup title from last year. Lech still has a shot at being crowned the Polish league winner with four rounds to go. Their next PKO BP Ekstraklasa clash, against Piast Gliwice, is scheduled for May 8th, 5:30 pm.
