Lech Poznań – Legia Warsaw 0:1

In the 27th round of PKO Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznań was beaten 0:1 at home by Legia Warsaw. Tomas Pekhart scored the only goal of the match.

After long weeks of absence, Ekstraklasa finally restarted and Żuraw’s squad were forced to face one of their biggest opponents – Legia Warsaw, i.e. the current leader of the league table. Both teams won the Totolotek Polish Cup clashes earlier that week, unlike the majority of the Ekstraklasa clubs for whom the 27th league round was the first match after a very long break from football.

Still, the opening minutes of the match weren’t an attractive spectacle. For most of the time, the two teams fought for the ball in the midfield. Lech was the first side to cause problems to their opponent’s defensive line. Tiba decided for an individual run and then set the ball for Puchacz, however, the latter’s shot missed the corner of the goal by centimetres. A few minutes later, Legia Warsaw scored. Gwilia crossed the ball in the penalty area and the miscommunication between van der Hart and Crnomarković gave Pekhart a perfect chance to tap the ball in the net.

After conceding the goal, Lech focused on the offensive but it was Legia that seemed more in control of the match. Occasionally the guests counterattacked dangerously but van der Hart intervened confidently. In the 37th minute, Lech came close to equalizing when Tiba sent a perfectly-timed long ball to Zhamaletdinov but the latter was successfully stopped by Majecki. The guests had two more goal-scoring opportunities before halftime but Jędrzejczyk was stopped by van der Hart and Wieteska’s shot was off target.

The hosts seemed on fire after the break which resulted in an increase of goal-scoring opportunities. Crnomarkovic even managed to place the ball in the back of Legia’s net but the referee signalised offside which was later confirmed on the video replays. Lubomir Šatka played a key role in the Saturday's game as his performance in the defence was close to perfect – the defender successfully stopped a few of Legia’s dangerous offensive attempts. On the other end of the pitch, Majecki was forced to intervene when Lech initiated a counterattack that Marchwiński finished off with a flat, precise shot. A moment later, Puchacz came close to scoring from the corner of the pitch but one of the defenders’ unfortunate intervention finished luckily for Legia as the ball bounced off the crossbar.

The team from Warsaw also occasionally caused trouble with their offensive attempts but neither Vesović, Antolić, nor Cholewiak managed to place the ball in the net as their efforts were either successfully blocked by the keeper or inaccurate. Meanwhile, Lech was determined to equalize but they seemed to lack an idea on how to beat Legia’s defence. In the injury time, Puchacz converted Tiba’s flat, precise pass into a very strong shot, however, it was also off target. The referee ended the match shortly afterwards hence it was Legia that triumphed in the Saturday match.
