In the second of the Polish Cup quarterfinals Lech Poznan won with Zaglebie Lubin 1:0. It was the second consecutive win against Stokowiec's players and thus Lech advanced to the semifinals of the national competition.
Before the match Zaglebie was in a bad mood since the team failed to win all of the recent 8 matches. Contrastingly, Lech did not lose any of the 5 league games that they have been in the past weeks and tonight they wanted to highlight the good series with a qualification to the semifinals, but also to break the streak of poor results achieved shortly after National Team groupings.
The team from Lubin started attacking early in the opening minutes. However, their offensive actions were ineffective and Lech had no trouble stopping the opponent. The hosts came closer to scoring when Thomalla and Gajos tried surprising the rival with a shot, but in both cases the failed to hit the target. As the minutes passed Lech started gaining control over the play and started creating more and more goal-scoring opportunities. Holman could have scored his third goal in the Polish Cup, but Polacek, with some problems, managed to catch the ball.
After halftime Zaglebie moved into the offensive once again, but their shots weren't causing much problems to Buric. The guests had their first good goal-scoring opportunity 20 minutes into the second half when Lech made a mistake which allowed Janus to race down the left flank. The player sent the ball into the penalty area, but luckily for Lech the cross was too weak and thus Buric managed to stop the ball before it got to any of the Zaglebie's footballers.
When Hamalainen and Lovrencsics came in on the pitch, the game became more dynamic. The hosts started creating opportunities to score and a goal seemed to be a matter of time. And indeed, Lech succeeded with its attacks, but only in the closing minutes of the injury time. Pawlowski got the ball from Holman, raced down the right flank, dribbled past the defenders and sent a strong, precise, flat shot into the back of the net.
It was the second time that Lech won with Zaglebie and thus the Polish Champions advanced to the semifinals. A draw will decide whom Lech is going to face in the battle for the final of the Polish Cup.
