19 goals and 20 assists – these are this season’s statistics of Lech’s homegrown players. In many aspects, they are the best in the country and for some of those youngsters, the current campaign is – so far – the best one in their careers.
For Kamil Jóźwiak and Tymoteusz Puchacz this season has undoubtedly been a great one so far. The first one has been achieving personal records, whereas the latter finally won a permanent spot in the first team and has been appearing on the pitch very regularly. Jóźwiak not only scored 6 goals and assisted his teammates 5 times, but he’s also the second player with most minutes spent on the pitch. Meanwhile, Puchacz appeared on the field in all matches but one when he was forced to sit on the stands having received 4 yellow cards. Puchacz also exploited all the opportunities he was given and managed to score 4 times and add 3 assists to his account so far this season.
There are also other youth players who have been getting more and more minutes recently, among them Jakub Kamiński, Jakub Moder, and Filip Marchwiński. The first one showed a lot of potential throughout autumn and then, following the winter break, Żuraw decided to position his as a right-back. Since the beginning of 2020, the youngster has already spent 850 minutes on the pitch. Considering that it’s Kamiński’s debut season and he’s also assisted his teammates 3 times, it’s a pretty good result. Moder and Marchwiński also played impressively over the last few months, both managing to find the back of the net a couple of times. Moder has two league goals on his account, same as his younger teammate who also scored once in a Polish Cup game.
Robert Gumny and Paweł Tomczyk – those two names were often listed in the starting line-ups throughout autumn but now they’re mentioned in medical reports. In autumn, the 1998-born players appeared on the pitch 16 and 17 times respectively, but neither got a chance to play this spring. Back when injuries weren’t a problem, both played a key role in Lech’s successes. Last season, Robert Gumny nearly hit a 100% attendance figure (minus 4 minutes) until in the clash with Piast Gliwice, he suffered a serious injury that resulted in a long pause. Meanwhile, Tomczyk’s goals against Piast Gliwice (1:1) and Jagiellonia Białystok (1:1) got Lech important points.
During the current campaign, 5 more homegrown players were given a chance to gain experience in the first team. In the match against Chrobry Głogów, Mateusz Skrzypczak helped Lech advance to the next stage of the Polish Cup, whilst Juliusz Letniowski has managed to get his first assist within 20 minutes of his debut. Filip Szymczak and Michał Skóraś also had the chance to play their first match for Lech’s senior team. However, the latter was sent on loan to Raków Częstochowa in autumn and throughout his stay at the league newcomers’, the appeared on the pitch 17 times, got one goal and 3 assists. Meanwhile, another Academy product, Tymoteusz Klupś, will spend the upcoming few months playing for Piast Gliwice on loan.
