League match no. 1700

On Friday night, Lech confidently beat Piast Gliwice 3:0. This game was special for the side from Poznan for more than one reason, since it was also the club’s match no. 1700 in the top division.

In the 16th round of PKO Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznan beat Piast Gliwice 3:0 following two goals from Gytkjaer and one from Amaral. For the Danish striker, it was a special match because he scored his 50th goal for the Polish club. Moreover, the clash with Piast was also significant from the perspective of Lech since it was the club’s 1700th top-division league game.

The history dates back to March 14th, 1948 when KKS Lech Poznań made their debut in the highest league division in a clash with Widzew Lodz which they lost. The club settled at the top of the Polish league structure and for a few seasons they were ranked third whilst Teodor Aniola kept winning the title of league’s best goal scorer. From then onwards, the club from Poznan drifted between the first, second, and third divisions until in the season 1972/73 they regained their position in the top division and stayed there for over 30 years.

Match number 500 took place in February 1980 when the team was beaten by GKS Katowice under the lead of their new coach, Wojciech Lazarek. Fast forward 16 years, Lech played their match number 1000 against Gornik Zabrze and drew 2:2. What’s interesting is that game number 1500 was also the first league match of the season, and also against Piast Gliwice. Rumak’s squad confidently beat their opponent 4:0 following a hattrick from Ubiparip despite playing without a crowd.

Over the span of 1700 matches, Lech won 7 Polish Championship titles, finished second in the top division twice, and was ranked third 6 times.
