Lech Poznan lost the first leg of Europa League qualifier 0:2. The Polish team was beaten by KRC Genk in the third round. The second leg is scheduled for August 16th.
The Belgian team was the first one to attack but their attempt was successfully blocked by De Marco. Lech responded with a counterattack led by Cywka and Makuszewski and finished off by Gytkjaer with a shot off target. In the 15th minute, Jevtic sent a precise cross into the box but neither Gajos nor the Danish striker managed to reach the ball and head into the back of the net. For the next 15 minutes, most of the play took place in the midfield and the two teams got few scoring chances.
In the 33rd minute, Genk scored the first goal following a free kick that Dewaest converted into a header but it was disallowed due to an offside. The Belgians had another opportunity to score in the 38th minute when Ndongala was just a couple of centimeters away from reaching the ball. Lech had a similar chance shortly afterward. The Polish team defended well until the 44th minute Malinovskyi fired a strong and precise shot at the goal and left the goalkeeper helpless.
Genk dominated the opening minutes of the second half. Dewaest could have gotten a double shortly after halftime, but this time his attempt was saved by Buric. The Belgian players kept on creating scoring chances which they converted into shots on target, one of which fell into the back of the net. It was Samatta that changed the score with a great header.
A couple of minutes later, De Marco attempted to head the ball into Genk’s goal but his attempt wasn’t precise enough. In the 63rd minute, Jevtic also came very close to scoring, however, lack of accuracy once again stopped him from scoring. For the next period of time, Genk remained in possession of the ball. They could have scored for the second time that night when Ndongala fired a great shot at Lech’s goal but the ball stopped on the post.
The Belgians were relentless and didn’t let Lech come too close to their own penalty area. In the 88th minute, the Polish side built a decent offensive action which was blocked at the last moment. Genk responded with Pozuelo’s shot that hit the crossbar. The score did not change before the final whistle and the Belgians won the match comfortably.
