Lech Poznan ended season 2016/17 with a draw against Jagiellonia Bialystok. Majewski and Tralka scored the goals for Lech. The team from Poznan was forced to finish the game with 10 men after Jevtic received a red card. Nonetheless, despite losing points, Lech will compete in European competition next season.
Lech’s clash with Jagiellonia was one of two matches which decided about who will finish the season on the first rank in the league table. All eyes were on Lechia’s game with Legia. The 4 teams had mathematical chances to win the Championship, but in order for Lech to succeed in that, the team from Poznan needed to beat Jagiellonia, while Legia had to lose to Lechia.
Even though Jagiellonia manager to enclose Lech on its own half of the pitch, the hosts scored first and made a big step towards winning the Championship. Lech led a quick counterattack - Kedziora crossed the ball just behind the defenders’ backs where Makuszewski was waiting. The midfielder passed to his teammate, Majewski, and the latter placed the ball in the back of the net with a flat, precise shot.
Jagiellonia was determined to equalize as quickly as possible, but they had to watch out for Lech’s counterattacks. One of Lech’s quick offensive actions from the 25th minute nearly ended in a goal for the guests. Robak received a good pass and struck it from a half-volley, but his attempt was slightly off target. The hosts had a couple of scoring chances as well, but the struggled to find a way past Lech’s defense line.
Jagiellonia tried dominating the match and employed high pressure. The hosts had a good chance to score in the 37th minute when Vassiljev’s shot flew a couple of centimeters next to Lech’s post. Paradoxically, it was Lech that scored the next goal. Jevtic decided for an individual run that Tralka finished off with a shot into the back of the net.
After halftime Jagiellonia visibly focused on catching up as quickly as possible. A loss to Lech meant that Jagiellonia wouldn’t complete on the international arena next season. Meanwhile, Lech waited for opportunities to counterattack. For instance, in the 52nd minute Tetteh, Majewski and Makuszewski built a rapid offensive action which the last tried finishing off with a shot, but he was blocked by one of the defenders at the last moment.
Lech successfully stopped Jagiellonia from getting too close to their own goal, mainly thanks to a great performance from Tralka and Tetteh. However, the first one had to be substituted due to an injury and Radut appeared on the pitch. Bjelica was hoping that Radut would restore calmness thanks to his ability to remain in possession of the ball for a long time.
However, the statistics indicated that Jagiellonia had the ball for the majority of the time. Goralski’s shot into the back of the net brought hope to the hosts. Jagiellonia didn’t give up and in the 88th minute Novikovas equalized, making Jagiellonia’s chance to win the Championship even higher. Shortly afterward Jevtic received a red card for a 2nd foul. Lech managed to defend the result until the last whistle and the two teams had to share points.
