In the 10th round of PKO Ekstraklasa, Lech Poznan travelled to Zabrze where the team was going to face Gornik. Mickey van der Hart was appointed the captain of the starting line-up. “It wasn’t the first time that I was wearing a captain armband but it’s been a long time and I have never been given the chance to lead a team at such a high level. It’s an incredible recognition for me,” said Lech’s goalkeeper.
At the beginning of the season, the squad picked Darko Jevtic to be their captain. However, since the Swiss midfielder wasn’t a part of the starting line-up on Saturday, the captain armband should have gone to Thomas Rogne. Unfortunately, the Norwegian is injured which meant that the third captain – Mickey van der Hart – was given the responsibility to lead the team.
“It’s a beautiful feeling to wear the captain armband for a team like Lech, however, I am conscious of the hierarchy that has been put in place. Darko and Thomas couldn’t play the match since the opening minutes for various reasons hence I was given the chance to experience what it’s like to lead my squad,” said Lech’s goalkeeper. “It wasn’t the first time that I was wearing a captain armband but it’s been a long time and I have never been given the chance to lead a team at such a high level. It’s an incredible recognition for me,” added van der Hart.
So far this season, Lech’s keeper managed to keep a clean sheet in three games, two of which were league clashes, and one was a Polish Cup match. The coaching staff and the players themselves explain that it’s the result of an offensive style of play employed by the team from Poznan.
I don’t have any particular goal in mind when it comes to clean sheets. It doesn’t really matter how many times I let the ball past me; I’d rather win 4:3 than get a 0:0 draw. I enjoy Lech’s offensive style of play and it’s one of the main reasons I came here. I prefer when teams accept the risk that goes with offensive football rather than simply defend with the whole team for 90 minutes,” explained van der Hart.
