Great news for the Lech Poznań fans – Mikael Ishak is going to stay with the Polish Champions! The captain signed a contract for two more years, until June 30th, 2025. The signing of the contract took place in a surprising place, at a surprising time - during the official opening of the Academy’s new Research & Development Centre in Wronki.
The signing was a surprise to everyone who attended the opening ceremony that took place on Tuesday afternoon. Towards the end of the official part, the club decided to share the unexpected news – Mikael Ishak appeared on the stage accompanied by the club’s Chairman and Owner, Piotr Rutkowski, and the Sporting Director Tomasz Rząsa. The three of them signed a new contract that will last until June 30th, 2025.
The previous agreement would have expired in 6 months’ time. Recently, the media has been speculating that Ishak will surely leave the Polish club in the summer as he has received multiple offers from abroad. “In the recent transfer windows, Ishak has already received many financially attractive offers. We rejected them all because we knew we wanted to keep him until the end of the contract, similar to how it was with Christian Gytkjaer who remained an important goalscorer until his last day at the club. However, in this case, there were ongoing negotiations, and we didn’t give up despite knowing how difficult it would be to make it happen. Hence, we are now proud to be able to announce that Mikael Ishak will stay at Lech for the next two years,” said Piotr Rutkowski, Lech’s Chairman and Owner.
Lech has had plenty of brilliant strikers in the past 15 years who went on to become league stars. Starting from Hernan Renfigo, all the way through Robert Lewandowski, Artjoms Rudnevs, Łukasz Teodorczyk, Marcin Robak, Christian Gytkjaer, and now Mikael Ishak who, when it comes to personal statistics, might top all of these names soon. The Swede joined Lech back in the summer of 2020 and immediately became a key figure in the Poznań squad.
This current season is Ishak’s third campaign for Lech. During his first season at Bułgarska Street, he scored 20 goals, in the following two less, and now he already has 14 successful attempts on his account and the club’s not yet halfway through the season. When we look at the Swede’s personal statistics in each competition, the 29-year-old has scored 36 times in PKO BP Ekstraklasa and16 times in the European competition, and in the case of the latter statistic, he is the best player in Lech’s history. In the overall goal scorers’ category, with 52 goals on his account, Ishak is ranked 13th ex-aqueo with Andrzej Juskowiak. He is 7 goals behind the top 10 and 13 goals behind Christian Gytkjaer, who is the 7th best goalscorer in the club’s history.
However, it’s just a matter of time, especially since the Swede signed a new contract. “No one needs to be convinced of Ishak’s sporting value. He is an extremely effective forward who gives us quality in the offense. On the pitch, he is one of the leaders and players that can be counted on when things don’t go according to plan. All you have to do is look at his goals, especially those scored in the European arena or the winners against Piast Gliwice or in the Poznań derby which were crucial in the context of our Championship title,” emphasized Lech’s Sporting Director. Tomasz Rząsa. “He is a player that feels great at our club, and so does his family. Poznań has become a sort of a second home for them, and this was also an important argument in our negotiations,” added Rząsa.
