In the 23rd round of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, Lech lost to Cracovia 1:2. Mikael Ishak scored the only goal for the team from Poznań – his 17th this season. The 2020/21 campaign is the best one yet for the 28-year-old.
Out of the 17 goals Ishak scored this season so far, 9 of them are league ones and 8 are Europa League goals (3 in the qualifying phase and 5 in the group phase). It’s the Swede’s fourth season in his career when he managed to get a two-digit number of goals. So far, during his best seasons, Ishak scored 13 goals – in the 2017/18 campaign for 1.FC Nürnberg and in the season 2015/16 for Randers FC.
“My main objective will always be for Lech to win. I am hoping to be useful in achieving that objective. I can’t promise to score 20 goals per season, but I can promise to give it all for the club,” said Ishak shortly after his arrival to Poznań.
The Swedish national team representative – after 20 league rounds – is ranked fourth in the goal scorers’ classification despite being forced to miss a few games due to injury. Only Tomas Pekhart from Legia Warsaw (21 goals), Jesus Imaz from Jagiellonia (10) and Jesus Jimenez from Górnik Zabrze (10) are better thank Ishak this season. Meanwhile, Flavio Paixao from Lechia Gdańsk, Jakub Świerczok from Piast Gliwice, Jakov Puljić from Jagiellonia, as well as Kamil Biliński from Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała have, so far, scored the same number of goals as Lech’s striker.
Interestingly, the ratio calculating the time needed for Ishak to score is favourable for the Swede – he needs, on average, 148 minutes to place the ball in the net. Only Pekhart (76 minutes) and Świerczok (124 minutes) have achieved a better score so far this season.
Mikael Ishak has scored in two matches in the row recently. Such a successful series of performances has happened before this season, last time in November. The Swede’s good disposition is a great sign and arouses optimism among the fans, especially considering that the striker experienced a goal drought between December 13th and March 14th.
It’s also worth mentioning that despite Lech no longer competing in Europa League – since the team was eliminated in the group phase – the Swedish forward still remains one of the competition’s best goal scorers. Ishak beat the rival’s goalkeeper five times in the group stage which ranks him fourth behind Borja Mayoral (Roma), Pizzi (Benfica) and Yusuf Yazici (Lille) who have 7 goals each, and Carlos Vinicius (Tottenham) who has 6 goals on his account.
