Another Lech Poznań player extends his contract. On Thursday afternoon, Michał Gurgul reached an agreement with the club. His new contract will last until June 30th, 2028. “For me, as a homegrown player, it’s an important moment and a big thing. It’s an incentive to work even harder to become an even better player every day,” said the 18-year-old defender.
For the youngster born in 2006, the turning point of his career took place in the 2022/2023 season. In the autumn round, Gurgul competed in the Central Junior League and during the winter break, he was promoted to Lech’s B team. Not long later, he received a chance to debut for the senior squad – in his first friendly match, against Hansa Rostock, the defender was praised for his performance. On March 12th 2023, Gurgul debuted in an official game for Lech’s first team – a league clash with Piast Gliwice (1:1). Since then, the defender made 30 appearances for the senior squad – 17 of them took place this season, ever since he became a starting line-up player in Niels Frederiksen’s team.
“We are happy about the extension of Michał Gurgul’s contract until June 30th, 2028. He is yet another homegrown player who trusted the path we have outlined for him. He is developing harmoniously, taking it step by step and already now, despite being 18, he is an important figure in the first team which is at the top of the league table and is fighting for the Polish Championship title. As a reward for his performances, our player received a first call-up for the Polish national team this autumn. We are counting on his further development over the upcoming months,” emphasized Lech’s Sporting Director, Tomasz Rząsa.
Gurgul has been praised for his performances this autumn. As a captain of the Polish U-19 squad, he helped his team advance to the next phase of the European Championship qualifications. Then, not long later, he received his first senior-team call-up from coach Michał Probierz.
“2024 was indeed important for me, but the truth is that every year is and each one carries different values. 2024 was one of the best years so far. However, I keep in mind that it’s still the beginning; there is no overexcitement with what I have achieved. I still want to develop, become a better player every day, and help Lech achieve success,” explained Michał Gurgul before adding, “For me, as a homegrown player, it’s an important moment and a big thing. It’s an incentive to work even harder to become an even better player every day.”
