April 14th, London, Craven Cottage. Fulham, fighting for the 2nd rank in Championship, faces Brentford which is 11th in the league table. In the injury time, Neal Maupay – a substitute striker – scores a header worth three points. The guest team is ecstatic, but there are players out there who have even bigger reasons to celebrate, among them Barry Douglas, Lech’s former footballer.
The introduction refers to Wolverhampton, located about 200km north-west of the English capital. After 6 years spent in the second and third division, Wolves have won a promotion to the top-tier. The team from Wolverhampton has been occupying the top spot in Championship since October. Hours after Maupay’s goal, the squad led by Nuno Espirito Santo beat Birmingham – a team desperate to avoid relegation – 2:0.
The role of Lech’s ex-player in the success of Wolves is indisputable. The Scott scored 4 times this season and added 14 assists to his account. Douglas is unbeaten in the number of the last passes, matched only by Aston Villa’s Robert Snodgrass. The Scottish left-back brought down to Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer from Turkish club Konvaspor turned out to be a brilliant choice to play alongside the young talents such as Diego Jota and Ruben Neves, and those more experienced like John Ruddy and Ryan Bennet, all of which played a key role in the team’s recent success.
In 2015, Douglas celebrated with Lech Poznan his only championship title so far. That same year, the left-back together with his Polish teammates won the Polish Super Cup after beating Legia Warsaw (3:1). The Scott played in 75 games for Lech, scoring 5 times, and assisting his teammates 21 times. In January 2016, he left the Polish club and joined Konvaspor where he won (unexpectedly) the Turkish Cup. Now Douglas can celebrate the promotion to one of the world’s best football leagues.
"Individually the guys have been great - you only have to look at the personal accolades and awards that the guys are up for, but overall as a squad we've been different class, and that's why we're where we are today," said Douglas in an interview recently published on the club’s official website. “Words can't describe that feeling of hopefully playing in the Premier League next year,” added the Scott who debuted for his national team in March this year. “We've had an incredible season, and the support has been incredible as well. We just need to go on and get the Championship trophy now,” summarised the 28-year-old who also announced at the end of last year that together with his wife they are expecting a baby.
