Lech Poznań board members have agreed to terminate Dariusz Żuraw's contract. The 48-year-old will no longer coach Lech’s first team.
Żuraw took over Lech's senior squad a bit over two years ago – at the end of March 2019 – as a replacement for Adam Nawałka. At first, he was meant to lead the team only temporarily, however, since his positive impact was far beyond what anybody expected, he was given the opportunity to work with the senior squad for longer. In his first full season as the coach, Lech won a silver medal in the league and kicked off the following campaign with an extraordinary performance in Europa League qualifiers – the side from Poznań beat four international opponents, some of whom were deemed much stronger, and finally, after 4 years, qualified to the group phase of Europa League. However, the team’s performance in the league isn’t living up to expectations – after 23 rounds of PKO BP Ekstraklasa, the squad is ranked 10th in the table which is far from satisfactory.
Żuraw led Lech from the sidelines in 72 league games (including the two matches in autumn 2018 when he was a caretaker coach), out of which 29 were wins, 24 draws, and 19 ended in a loss. On top of that, he managed the senior squad in 19 matches in the Polish Cup and Europa League competition.
The name of the new coach will be announced soon. Until then, the training sessions will be led by Żuraw’s assistant coaches and staff.
