Corner kicks are key
Lech Poznan beat Rakow Czestochowa 3:2 in the 6th league round. The first and last goals were both scored following corner kicks – visible proof of how much the team has improved at set pieces, especially considering that this part of play was their weakness last season.
In the Saturday clash with Rakow Czestochowa, Zuraw’s players scored two goals from set pieces, more precisely corner kicks. Last season, this particular part of play was Lech’s Achilles’ heel; the team from Poznan scored only 3 goals from set pieces throughout the whole campaign – the worst result in the whole league. The corner kick statistics weren’t satisfactory either.
Since the beginning of this season, the team has been showing various ways of executing set pieces – sometimes they use short, one-touch passes, whereas other times, they cross the ball directly into the box. The training staff placed a big emphasis on set pieces during the pre-season. All the hard work the squad put into improving this part of play had already been visible during the pre-season training matches. For instance, in the game against Dutch Vitesse, Crnomarkovic scored a similar goal to Gytkjaer’s most recent one.
Even though Lech is getting more corner kicks and their accuracy has improved, one thing remains unchanged – Darko Jevtic’s assists. Last season, the Swiss midfielder got two assists from corner kicks. “It’s hard to protect yourself from Jevtic’s corner kicks – he’s simply on another level,” commented Rakow’s coach after the Saturday match.
