Nikola Vujadinovic appeared on the pitch only once during Lech’s first 22 league matches this season. However, during the past 6 league games, the defender got more minutes. “I am additionally thrilled with how well we’ve been performing,” explained the 31-year-old.
In autumn, the Montenegrin missed numerous games because of a shoulder injury. The defender describes the period as bittersweet. “On one hand I was frustrated that I couldn’t help my friends, but on the other hand I saw my teammates win and I rejoiced with them. However, it’s a totally different story when you join a training session and the atmosphere in the team is miserable. It’s easier to focus on your recovery when your teammates are ambitiously fighting for the trophies,” explained the defender.
Now it’s Thomas Rogne that has to watch his teammates play from the sidelines. The Norwegian, similarly to Vujadinovic, cannot join the squad on the pitch. “Me and Thomas met in the Scottish league a while ago. We have talked a lot about our problems, but I am sure that his return will strengthen the team significantly. I keep my fingers crossed for his quick recovery,” added Vujadinovic.
Meanwhile, the defender’s return has already positively influenced the team. Now coach Bjelica has 3 centre-backs at his disposal. “The rivalry in the defensive line is a an obvious advantage for the coach,” emphasised Vujadinovic. “I never feared rivalry. I came here to give it all and make myself useful. I have been waiting for a chance to prove myself for some time now and considering how well we have been performing, I am even more thrilled.”
Lech’s centre-backs agree that it doesn’t matter who is their partner in the defensive line. “We believe in ourselves. Rafal and Emir and strong, tough players and whenever they are healthy, they strengthen the team. Therefore, it’s not about who plays next to you, but about correct and effective communication on the pitch,” explained Vujadinovic.
The 31-year-old believes that there is a number of different defensive formations that the coach can use, and one of them includes himself and the two defenders playing alongside each other. “Of course, we compete for the same spot in the defensive line. However, at the beginning of the season the three of us played next to each other, all thanks to Emir’s versatility because he can play on multiple different positions,” summarized the Montenegrin.
