The first Icelandic player at Lech

On Tuesday afternoon, Gisli Thordarson signed a contract with Lech Poznań. He is the first Icelandic player to represent the club from Poznań. He completes the list of footballers from Nordic countries who have played for Lech.

Officially, the Scandinavian region includes only Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. However, when we refer to Nordic countries, Finland and Iceland are also a part of this category. Thanks to Gisli Thordarson’s signing, Lech has now been represented by a player from each of the Nordic countries. However, it is worth adding, that various autonomic territories are also a part of the Nordic region. Greenland and Faroe Islands are controlled by Denmark, whereas Åland Islands are a part of Finland. Lech has yet to sign footballers from those autonomous regions. Interestingly, players from the Faroe Islands have already appeared in the Polish top division in the past.

Now Lech will be represented by the first Icelandic player in the club’s history. Aron Johannsson used to wear the blue-and-white shirt, however, even though his parents were Icelandic, he was born in the USA and represented the country. He had a double nationality, but because of the national team he chose to represent, he was considered an American. Therefore, Thordarson is officially the first Icelandic player to compete for Lech. Once he debuts, Thordarson will add the 48th country to Lech’s list of player nationalities.

When it comes to the Nordic countries, Swedes are the most popular nationality at Lech (7), Norwegians come second (4), and the Danish and Finns are placed third exequo (3).
