On Saturday evening, Lech Poznań put an end to two long, undesirable streaks. The 3:0 win against Pogoń was the first triumph in an away clash since mid-October and the first clean sheet since 5 games.
Niels Frederiksen’s squad had a challenging task – they were to face Pogoń Szczecin – the only team to win the maximum number of league points in 2025 so far – in an away clash. Meanwhile, the hosts had just played a Polish Cup game with Piast Gliwice (2:0) which dragged into extra time.
However, the opening minutes didn’t look as though Pogoń had just played 120 minutes and the players were tired – the hosts immediately put high pressing on their opponent, making it hard for Lech to hold onto the ball. In addition, the squad from Szczecin even created two good goal-scoring chances, but their first attempt stopped on the post, and the following time, Bartosz Mrozek and Rasmus Carstensen intervened successfully. The match changed when Niels Frederiksen’s players, quite unexpectedly, scored a goal. Daniel Hakans’ strong shot was stopped by Pogoń’s keeper, but Mikael Ishak’s follow-up attempt was impossible to save. Shortly before halftime, the team from Poznań found the back of the net once again after a great team effort, but the goal was disallowed due to Carstensen’s offside.
The second half looked completely different to the first 45 minutes. Ishak’s goal indisputably gave a morale boost to Lech’s players and they started dominating on the pitch. Niels Frederiksen’s squad kept looking for ways to change the score; they finally succeeded in the 68th minute when Afonso Sousa was fouled inside Pogoń’s box and Ishak confidently converted the penalty kick into a second goal. Not long before the final whistle, Lech sealed the deal with an incredible, 40-meter lob from Joel Pereira who spotted that Pogoń’s keeper was only just returning to the goalline and set the final score to 3:0. As a result, Lech finally put an end to a long streak of away performances without a win.
