Lech Poznań - Legia Warsaw 5:2

For the third time this season, Lech Poznań’s loss in a league game is followed by an impressive win. This time, Niels Frederiksen’s players quickly bounced back from their defeat against Puszcza Niepołomice and triumphed in the clash with Legia Warsaw 5:2.

Jagiellonia’s last-minute draw against Raków Częstochowa (2:2) meant that for the first time in a long time, Lech wasn’t ranked at the top of the league table. However, the squad from Poznań had a chance to recover the leader’s throne if only they defeated Legia Warsaw – a challenging task considering that the opponent has either won or tied their last 9 matches.

The Sunday clash began perfectly for the hosts – in the 5th minute, Ali Gholizadeh recovered the ball and changed the score with a beautiful shot. However, as time passed, Legia started causing more and more problems for Lech’s defensive line with their high pressing. The team from the capital emphasized their dominance with an equalizer from Marc Gual. Just 10 minutes later, the score changed again – Antoni Kozubal’s strong shot from the 16th meter put the hosts up by one goal. Before the referee announced halftime, Legia replied with yet another equalizer – Afonso Sousa’s handball in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the guests which Rafał Augustyniak converted into a second goal.

The crowd gathered at Bułgarska Street was equally entertained in the second half. Within the first 15 minutes, Lech found the back of the net twice. In the first instance, Afonso Sousa converted a beautiful team effort into another goal for the hosts. Then, not long later, Joel Pereira crossed the ball into the box where Mikael Ishak was waiting and the captain beat Kobylak with a flat, precise shot. However, Lech didn’t stop there – in the 69th minute, Kozubal recovered the ball from Gual and set up Sousa with a perfect pass which the Portuguese converted into the fifth and final goal. The 5:2 triumph enabled Lech to regain the position of the PKO BP Ekstraklasa leader.
