Lech Poznań ended a series of lost league games by defeating Korona Kielce 2:0. Ali Gholizadeh and Mikael Ishak scored the goals in front of the crowd gathered at Bułgarska Street. The win helped Lech advance to second place in the PKO BP Ekstraklasa table.
For the first time this season, Niels Frederiksen’s squad lost two matches in a row. The conceded points meant that Lech had to give away the leader’s seat, and the fight for the Polish Championship title became more challenging. On Saturday evening, the players from Poznań had a perfect chance to bounce back as they welcomed Korona Kielce to Bułgarska Street. Their opponent is performing impressively since the beginning of the year, and they have only lost one match so far.
The Saturday clash was a rather calm one. The hosts dominated the game but without clear goal-scoring opportunities, until the 30th minute, when the duo Ali Gholizadeh and Patrik Walemark gave Lech the first goal. In the second half, the Swedish winger came close to scoring, but his shot was just slightly off target. 15 minutes before the final time, Daniel Hakans, who came in from the bench, could have added his name to the goal scorers’ sheet, but in a one-on-one chance with Korona’s keeper, the Fin decided to pass to Ishak instead of shooting. Meanwhile, Lech’s captain was outflanked by one of the defenders and failed to convert the chance into a goal. However, a few minutes later, Ishak found the back of the net when he received a beautiful long ball from Walemark and set the final score to 2:0 for the hosts. Jagiellonia Białystok and Raków Częstochowa both lost points in this league round, hence, the squad from Poznań is now ranked second, three points behind the latter team.
