Lech Poznań has been unstoppable recently. Niels Frederiksen’s squad resumed league competition and won their first game after the international break 5:0, giving no chance to the current Polish Champions, Jagiellonia Białystok. The final score reinforced Lech's position at the top of the league table.
The clash between the current PKO BP Ekstraklasa leader and the Polish Champions was the most awaited game of this round. Frederiksen’s squad was in impressive shape prior to the international break, whereas Jagiellonia Białystok was desperate for some time off after a marathon of games in European competition. However, despite the league break, Jagiellonia failed to stop Lech’s winning streak.
Since the first whistle, Frederiksen’s squad dominated on the pitch. The hosts were focused on the offensive, simultaneously effortlessly stopping Jagiellonia’s attempts to come close to their goal. Afonso Sousa began the scoring marathon with a beautiful shot from outside the box. The first goal didn’t satisfy Lech’s hunger and the players from Poznań kept attacking without mercy. Shortly before the break, Adrian Dieguez denied Mikael Ishak an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and, after seeing the video replays, the referee was forced to show a straight red card to Jagiellonia’s player. Dino Hotić converted the free kick into a beautiful goal, changing the score to 2:0.
Lech was equally in control of the game in the second half of the match, but they lacked opportunities to increase their advantage over the opponent. Then, to everyone’s surprise, in the last 10 minutes of the game, Frederiksen’s players found the back of the net 3 times. First, Filip Szymczak converted a penalty kick into a third goal. Then Jetmir Haliti accidentally redirected Ali Gholizadeh’s pass into his own net and, finally, in the added time, Filip Jagiełło received a great ball from Joel Pereira and tapped the ball into the goal. The impressive 5:0 triumph was Lech’s fourth win in a row and it enabled the team from Poznań to reinforce their position at the top of the league table.
