Lech Poznań finished fourth in the prestigious youth tournament, Enea Lech Cup. On Sunday, Krystian Nowicki’s squad competed in the Champions League, but in the match for the 3rd place, they lost 3:5 against Sporting CP.
Following Saturday, Lech was indisputably one of the best teams at the tournament - out of the seven games, the squad from Poznań won six and drew once. However, the format of the tournament – with the teams being divided into Champions League and Europa League – proved in the past that Sunday can look much different than day one.
First, Lech had to face Chelsea whom they beat 5:1 the previous day. However, this time the English side changed their tactics and focused on the defence whilst waiting for chances to counterattack, and that’s how they scored two out of the three goals. Meanwhile, Lech found the back of the net just twice, hence it was their English opponent that triumphed.
Not long later, Slavia Prague beat Sporting in an exhilarating clash, which meant Lech couldn’t afford another loss. However, in the match against the Poles, the Czech scored twice and, more importantly, successfully kept their rival away from their goal. Lech was determined to get at least one goal but they failed to do so and it was Slavia that – deservedly – advanced to the final.
Meanwhile, Lech had one more shot at their seventh podium in a row. In the match for the 3rd place, the squad from Poznań faced Sporting who they had already played against in the group phase and won 3:2. The clash for the bronze medal was equally exhilarating – Sporting scored twice in the first half, but Szczęsny and Dombrowicz helped Lech equalize.
In the second half, Bejm gave Lech a lead for the first time in the match. However, from then on, Sporting started to dominate – they scored three more goals and won third place thanks to a 5:3 final score. Despite not ending up on the podium, Lech’s youth players delivered plenty of positive emotions to the crowd gathered in the stands and they deserve a round of applause.
