Lech Poznań beat third-division Znicz Pruszków 3:2 in the round of 32 of the Polish Cup and qualified for the next stage of the tournament.
Lech’s players have had a busy schedule recently, playing games every three days on average, therefore coach Żuraw decided to give a few key footballers rest in the clash with Znicz. The squad for the Polish Cup match was mostly composed of substitutes and reserve team players.
However, despite competing with the second-choice squad, Lech has dominated the game since the first whistle and they sealed their advantage with a goal in the 18th minute. It was Awwad who converted Kacharava’s pass into a beautiful, strong shot right into the corner of the net. It might have seemed that the goal would make it easier for Lech, but to everyone’s surprise, 30 minutes into the first half, the scoreboard showed a 1:1 draw. Wichtowski took advantage of the chaos in Lech’s penalty area and effortlessly placed the ball in the net.
The first quarter of the second half was the turning moment of the match. Ramirez’s extraordinary performance helped Lech get an important win. Although the Spaniard was also supposed to rest for the Polish Cup game, he was forced to replace injured Marchwiński. Within 15 minutes, the midfielder scored two goals and changed the score to 3:1 for the side from Poznań.
Znicz did manage to score again, in the 68th minute, thanks to a great attempt from substitute Zagórski, however, Lech successfully defended from then on, and therefore it was the team from Poznań that advanced to the round of 16 of the Polish Cup.
