On Wednesday, the club from Poznan signed defender Tomasz Dejewski. Lech’s homegrown player has been competing for Warta Poznan for the past three years. His contract will last until 2021.
Tomasz Dejewski was born in Grudziadz and in year 2011 he joined Lech’s academy. He competed for youth teams until in season 2013/14 he jumped into the first team squad. For three years, he was regularly playing for Lech’s reserves – in total, he appeared in 75 matches for the club’s B team and scored 10 goals. Then he was sent on loan to Warta Poznan where he stayed for over three years. Whilst competing for Lech’s local rival, Dejewski appeared on the pitch over 500 times in the third division and in the most recent season, he got the chance to play in 16 games at the second division level.
Dejewski is one of many homegrown footballers that joined the first team squad ahead of the upcoming season. Dejewski’s task will be to train with the senior players and fight for a place in Lech’s starting line-up, however, in the meantime he will also provide help to the B team which has just recently won a promotion to the second division.
“We are thrilled to have another one of ‘ours’ join the first team. Dejewski’s career shows that there are various ways to reach the top. Sometimes, you move from the academy to a different club so that eventually you’ll able to play for your home club’s senior squad. This transfer is a motivation for all youth footballers to keep on working hard and progressing constantly. You might have thought that Tomek parted ways with Lech, but soon he will once again play at Bulgarska street,” said Tomasz Rzasa, Lech’s Sporting Director.
“Even though he is primarily a right-footed player, he also performs well as a left centre-back. For us, the ability to play on multiple positions in the defense is a very valuable characteristic. During his span at Warta Poznan, Dejewski improved as a player, matured physically, and familiarized himself with adult football. Now he will compete for a spot in the starting line-up with more experienced teammates such as Rogne and others who are still to join the squad,” added Rzasa.
Tomasz Dejewski signed a two-year contract with Lech and he will join his new teammates on Thursday. “After three years spent at Warta Poznan, I am returning home. During my span at the other club, I matured as a professional player and this transfer means a great deal to me. I know what I want and what I need to do to make a difference. Of course, for now it’s just words hence I need to work hard in order to get a chance. I am thrilled to have been given a second chance and I will give it all to make the best of it,” said Lech’s newest signing.
