Three Lech players to compete at EURO 2024

The long-awaited European Championship will kick off on upcoming Friday. Bartosz Salamon, Miha Blažič, and Nika Kvekveskiri have all been called up for the most important football tournament of the Old Continent. In terms of the number of national team representatives at the EURO 2024, Lech is the leader among Ekstraklasa clubs.

Eight players that represent PKO BP Ekstraklasa clubs daily will have an opportunity to compete at the European Championship in Germany. Bartosz Salamon has been called up by Poland’s national team coach. The defender was also a part of the final squad at the EURO back in 2016, however, back then, he did not get any minutes. Now, considering the national team’s formation and Salamon’s appearance in the two recent friendlies, against Ukraine (3:1) and Turkey (2:1), his chances seem high. Aside from the 33-year-old, coach Michał Probierz also called up other Ekstraklasa players – Kamil Grosicki (Pogoń Szczecin) and Taras Romanczuk (Jagiellonia Białystok)

Miha Blažič was one of Slovenia’s key players during the EURO 2024 qualifiers, hence it was no surprise that he was called up for the tournament in Germany. Matjaz Kek’s squad will begin the competition with a match against Denmark (Sunday), and then they will face Serbia and England. The 31-year-old will share the dressing room with another Ekstraklasa player – Erik Janża from Górnik Zabrze.

The first Lech Poznań player who was sure he’d be travelling to Germany in June was Nika Kvekveskiri. The midfielder is a regular starter for the Georgian national team. In the March playoffs against Greece, he converted a crucial penalty kick that gave Georgia a historic qualification for the tournament. Otar Kakabadze from Cracovia and the former Lech Poznań player Gio Tsitaishvili (Dinamo Batumi) have also received a call-up from Willy Sagnol.

Ekstraklasa players called up for EURO 2024:

Lech Poznań: Bartosz Salamon, Miha Blažič, Nika Kvekveskiri
Jagiellonia Białystok: Taras Romanczuk
Górnik Zabrze: Erik Janża
Cracovia: Otar Kakabadze
Pogoń Szczecin: Kamil Grosicki
Raków Częstochowa: Bogdan Racovitan
