On Monday, Lech Poznań faced Stal Mielec in an away league clash. Shortly before the recent international break, Mariusz Rumak’s squad finally put an end to a run without a win and defeated Warta Poznań 2:0. However, their next opponent collected the most points in the spring round, hence no one expected the Monday match to be an easy one.
Stal dominated in the first 30 minutes of the match, causing problems for Lech’s defence with crosses from both flanks and the corners of the pitch, however, Bartosz Salamon and Miha Blazić successfully stopped the hosts from scoring. Finally, towards the end of the first half, Rumak’s squad responded with a few offensive attempts of their own – Filip Marchwiński’s shot was stopped by the keeper, whereas Filip Szymczak’s follow-up shot was blocked at Krystian Getinger from the goal line. The second half looked much different – it was the team from Poznań that dominated indisputably.
“For me, it was also an unpleasant match. Stal always stayed on their half of the pitch whenever we attacked. It’s not easy to overcome that. We had a few goal-scoring opportunities that we could have taken advantage of. However, we failed to do so and we got one point,” said Bartosz Mrozek.
It is Lech’s third clean sheet in a row. Before Stal, neither Górnik Zabrze nor Warta Poznań managed to get the ball past Mrozek. If we only consider PKO BP Ekstraklasa, it’s Lech’s best run so far this season. The good disposition of the defensive line and Bartosz Mrozek’s form enabled the latter to move up the goalkeeper rank, closer to the current leader, i.e. Rafał Leszczyński. The 24-year-old is just one clean sheet away from equalizing Śląsk Wrocław’s keeper.
“Koki Hinokio’s shots in the first half were uncomfortable, and so were the goal-scoring opportunities that followed set pieces. In the second half, there were fewer such situations inside our box, although Krystian Getinger did have a chance to score from a header, so I had to remain cautious,” explained Lech’s goalkeeper.
